On July 10, 2013 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware State Police cited a man for bicycling while under the influence of alcohol after he drove into a state trooper’s cruiser that had been pulled off to the side of the road in anticipation of flagging down the bicyclist.
The incident occurred around 1:30 am Wednesday on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach. It’s reported that the bicyclist, who was traveling north without a headlight, was weaving in and out of traffic while using his cell phone. Once the trooper proceeded to stop the biker in an attempt to question his peculiar biking habits, he proceeded to ride past the trooper and crash into the rear end of his vehicle. Although the rider wasn’t hurt from the collision he was immediately cited for driving under the influence of alcohol.
This is a great example of what not to do after having a few drinks in your system. Most people believe that riding a bicycle is a safe alternative to driving a car when it comes to being pulled over by the police. This is a very common misconception, riding a bicycle while intoxicated is just as dangers, both legally and physically. After enjoying a night out with some friends you should always leave the transportation to someone else. Either call a cab or have a designated driver in your group. It will save you from a lot of legal and financial trouble.
